about

There is an undoubted link between the methodology of visual arts and music, this very phenomenon is the artistic inclination of HakGwai, who initially engaged with the use of these mediums for therapeutic relief and as a mode of creation expression. This fusion of artistic elements is his vehicle to exploring and experimenting with his favourite themes of mythology, fantasy and science-fiction.

The result is a montage of immersive sounds and sonic dreamscapes and what sounds like cinematic scores designed for ethereal scenes and worlds we are yet to see. The artists’ creative approach to music production breaks away from the standard method of borrowed melodies and loops and is rather a reimagined application of borrowed sounds he treats as a palette from which He illustrates unique blends of electronic textures, harmonies and arrangements.

“Eye of the Sun” is the debut release from HakGwai made up of 6 recordings split into a 2 part project, released by Johannesburg, South Africa based label Subterranean Wavelength (SubWav), an outlet for which he is also actively a Creative Director.

The project follows a fantastic narrative centered around a mythical protagonist ‘Eye of The Sun” and plays out as a collection of modern scores and sound design telling the story and evoking an imaginary journey .

The first part of the project released 19 February 2021 features appearances from other Johannesburg natives who contributed live instrumentation, production and vocals to the compositions.

Live Guitar recordings and additional synth work by composer and multi-instrumentalist Chimurenga, Programming and additional Production from label partner Micr.pluto and a Vocal Performance by Zetina Mosia. The contributions from these collaborators gave an already well rounded project some saturation, boldness and musical complexity.
